IMHO Having a bike lift makes the whole process easier.

As has been said remove things like exhaust, carb, primary, unbolt the gearbox and remove it and don’t forget to remove any wiring to the engine, I would also recommend draining the engine oil before taking it out of the frame.

And yes, take the head / cylinder off as well as it reduces the weight, also remove the piston form the con rod, put the crank at BTDC and stuff the cases with rag to protect the rod – easy to bend it if you leave the piston waggling around on the end of it !

Aim to have the minimum mass that you have to manhandle, and putting the bike onto a lift before starting work makes life a lot easier.

Good luck

Thanks for all the advice, have removed everything that's easy to remove. I plan to take out complete with gear box. How is the engine held in at the back? Front looks straight forward enough. Is it just a case of taking out the big long bolt the has the gearbox support brackets on? Good tip on the axel stands. Nearly there with it. just need to get a really big stamp now!

You may find it easier to remove the two studs through the top of the gearbox and rotate the two triangular brackets up out of the way or remove them altogether.

There is a long bolt under the gearbox too but the box just sits down on top of it with the bolt in a recess, you may need to loosen it then you'll have to lift the gearbox UP to clear this bolt.

The "short" back mudguard usually attaches to a bracket on the back of the gearbox mounting studs.

Thanks , I can’t remove the two bolts as the head is near a caseing that I am not removing, not enough space . So I will remove the big long bolt . After support the back end on stands. Thanks re the rear mud guard fastener . Just need to look at and understand the bolt under the gear box . Do I need to undo and remove? Or just undo?

You don't need to remove that bolt under the gearbox, loosening it slightly is fine. If you still have the primary casing attached, you probably won't be able to remove it anyway. There is just an open slot on the underside of the gearbox that rests on top of the bolt.
