I have just bought the remains of a 1962 Interceptor.

The gearbox needs work (it's in bits and some parts are in need of replacement.)

Is there anything from an Indian gearbox which cann be used in the Uk one? I know that the mainshaft is longer in thge twin gearbox, but what about the rest?

Hi Allan, firstly, there is a Forum for Interceptor owners at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/RE_Interceptor/info The tooth form of the gears in the Albion box changed in 1959 to what is called the 'coarse' type. They are not interchangeable with the early fine form except as pairs. I don't know if the Indian made ones are still the fine type. However, even if they do fit I would try and use genuine parts as the Interceptor puts a great deal more stress on the box than a Bullet does. A look at the Online Parts Books suggests that they are all available from our Hosts. One thing is worth looking at, the sleeve gear G2/8 has a bronze bush in it, check that this has not turned blocking the oil relief holes. Consider replacing it anyway, the Indian part although not as well made as the original will fit and works well. I have rebuilt quite a few of these boxes including 3 Interceptor ones and the Inter can really punish the design so do it right!

Thanks for the info Mark.

I share your concerns over the robustness of the Indian gearbox.

I looked at your Yahoo Group link and tried to join using my existing Yahoo mail account. I went through all the 'tick the boxes with a so-and-so in it' but nothing seems to have happened.

Am I supposed to get a confirmation email to my Yahoo email account?

The Group is actively moderated so it may take a few days for 'Royal' who is in Australia by the way, to clear your membership. In the meantime there is a publicly accessible site at
http://www.ozemate.com/interceptor/ with lots of things of interest. Try the Pit area first.

I see, Mark. I'll wait for a reply, thanks.

I've seen that other site. You're right, there is some good info. there.

Back to the gearbox, do you know if the Hitchcock's 'closer ratio' conversion would work in a Redditch 'box? I recently sold my old 4-speeder with this conversion in it after I fitted a 5-speeder to my Bullet.

It had been in storage doing nothing for months, and then a friend asked if I would sell it to him. 'Why not,' I said, 'I won't need it any more.'

Then the Interceptor project came along......

Yes, it should work because they are a pair. Actually I have those pinions sitting on the shelf to do the same conversion myself one day when I build an Interceptor Special but that'll have to wait until the current Mk2 project is finished. Any chance of pics of your bike?

Hi, All gears interchange, india uses course gears as per late redditch boxes. The only problem is the later use of metric bearing which require different mainshafts and inner gearcase. Vince

Thanks Vince. That's really useful info.

There's not much to photograph at the moment, Mark!
It is all dismantled in storage boxes and neatly stacked in my workshop.

I'll post photos when the 'dry build' gets underway.

Understood Allan, do let us know how it goes, I am i contact with a couple of other chaps working on these early Interceptors and I may be able to help you. I will post some pics of my 1966 model at some point!
