Hi, where are you situated? Check if gears are selecting by raising rear wheel off ground, turn wheel by hand and try to engage each gear by moving neutral finder by hand. If gears engage problem maybe in selector mechanism. Questions. Has this been disturbed ? Does the gear lever centralise when moved up and down? If not weak or broken selector spring. There are two. Lastly are you trying to engage gears without rotating gearbox? The dogs need to line up. Try turning engine over on the kickstart as you select gears by hand. Vince

Hi vince

I’m 6 miles south of bakrwell so smack I middle of Peak District really, will try lifting back wheel thanks for that! the end cover has been removed to clean and degrease the clutch arm but nothing else has been moved or touched, gear lever does re centralised so large spring at back does work but how good it is I don’t know as there’s a fair bit of slop in gear lever anyway but always has been

a new update on this one ( sorry for the log sufering ones!)

got some bike time on saturday to look at the enfield again, stripped and rebuilt clutch with new washer behind the main basket nut and the clutch plates and basket had any burs removed on the edges with an engineers file to ensure smooth operation, all put in correct order, slackened off the cable adjusters and adjusted solely on the clutch arm to remove most of the free play in the cable and with the back wheel off the ground and the bike running beriefly i was not able to prevent drag.

Removed the outer primary casing and watched the clutch in operation to find that despite the nut being 'FT' the basket and primary chain sprocket still moves outward in addition top some seperation of the plates when the clutch lever is pulled ( but the basket doesnt wobble like it did previously)

to check there wasnt too much shaft float causing the issue from the other end I removed the gearbox end cover and the bearing cap off the gearbox shaft and found the nut to be little more than finger tight but with tab in place, removed tab and oil thrower cleaned up and rebuilt tightended the nut properly and replaced the tab washer so that wont be coming loose anytime soon.

rebuilt the end cover (noting all gear change mechanism springs appear in good order and doesnt appear to be any undue wear from what I can see ) readjusted clutch arm and rechecked operation..

clutch basket and chain sprocket still moves outward when pulling lever and the clutch still drags!
on plus side i was able to select all gears up and down box!! hoo bloody ray!!!!

so what could anyone advise what could be causing the free play in the basket and sprocket?

Thanks

Phil

Yes another update on this old enfield, so now the enfield is my sole bike ive made decision to work when possible on it to get it back to road worthy status, started her up on monday night after not being touched since my last update and found that i was able to engage first ( still a slight drag from clutch but no oil in it yet as its been apart loads recently for testing after filing any burrs off the clutch plates ) manasged two quick trips up the road going up and up and down the box before on enf od the 2nd run she jammed in 3rd gear again, ( possibly due to ack of oil in primary possibly due to lack of 111196 behind the neutral finder, so plan of action is, fill primary with ATF and test if clutch dosent drag great thats one bit solved next questiuon is it safe to run the bike briefly up the road without the neutral finder bolt in place to rule out if it is the lack of 111196 thats causing the gears to jam? thanks

Update time again, gearbox end cover strengther has purchased and now been fitted as per instructions so no more flexing of the cover :-) filled chain case with ATF adjusted the clutch to spec ( 5mm free play at lever ) and I still have clutch drag, starting to think i shoul djust take the plunge and buy a whole new clutch now and be done with it, tried adjusting at the bars/ mid cable and at the clutch arm to no avail, there is still some drag so it will stall if you let the revs drop in gear

Hi, try with minimum amount of play in the cable. Bear in mind that as the clutch gets hot the cable will go slack and clearance will increase. Vince
