No. The plunger thing is called the Detent Plunger and despite what might seem, you should have the plunger set as light as possible. The ratchet plate is in the outer cover. If you have a manual it is described in the gearbox section. Have a look at the 1959 Connie in Parts Book Online, page 9, you are interested in items 3 and 4 and the clearance between them.
