At the risk of stating the obvious people are freeing the clutch off before starting the bike. In my experience if you don't the clutch will drag even if you have only stopped for five minutes.

I always have to free the clutch if the bike has been stood for more than about an hour. Engine off, in neutral, clutch lever in, kick it over until it frees (as you have described), then it's usually OK when riding.

I think the clutch drum retaining clip hadn't been seated properly. The clutch plates wouldn't have been square to each other.I needed this fixed before selling the bike as I have my eye on a Himalayan?

Yep, that would do it. It's always good when you find something. Taking it to bits, not finding anything, putting it back together, and finding it works means mixed emotions. Glad it's fixed but worrying in case it comes back.

I take it this is the bike in the picture? It's a cracker. I don't know you get it so clean and polished.
