On a 2016 C5, there is a narrow rubber tube connected to the petrol tank underneath at the front left. It then wends its way back and down behind the engine but is not connected to anything. It had perished and come off the connection at the top. Does anyone know what it is for?

There is no such pipe shown on the parts diagrams on this site, I suggest you need to contact our hosts.

It's a gasoline vent tube, serving three purposes.

Gasoline vapors can be especially dangerous under pressure (pretty much why it is useful), and as the temperature fluctuates it is safer to relieve the vapor pressure than it is to potentially have it build up. The gasoline vapors should preferably not be ejected onto a potential spark source (battery) or hot running motor.
As fuel is drawn through the carburetors or fuel pump, that volume must be replaced in the tank with fresh air or the vacuum in the tank will resist further gasoline extraction. When drawn up a long tube with very little vacuum, there is little chance of it pulling in large amounts of water, dirt, dust, or other contaminants.
If the tank were nearly full cold and then heated, or somehow overfilled, this would allow the excess to drain through the tube toward the ground in a safer area than dripping on a hot engine or battery.

Thanks for that Vijayinder. I'll put a new tube on. The parts book on line is quite out of date. The newer C5s do not even have front mounting bolts as shown online.

The online parts book for the C5 covers the early bikes up to 2010 ie it is now 8 years old. There have been all sorts of tweaks since then. My guess is that it will need to be updated for the Euro IV versions with ABS and rear disc brake. If I were you I would find some tubing other than the RE original stuff. Ironically as it comes from the land of India rubber you’d think the OEM stuff would be good; not so. The tank vent tubes don’t last long and neither does the crankcase breather tube. On an original EFI one when that perished or cracks you can get fuelling issues as it vents into the air filter housing. In my case it no longer does this as I’ve fitted a carb; one day I’ll get around to sorting out a better breather. You need to keep an eye on the pump feed tube as well. Any hole in that will be bad news.

The "free line" fuel hose they use on racing karts is very good and quite inexpensive. It's clear with a red stripe on. It is ethanol resistant and has a thick wall which makes it very resistant to kinking or collapsing. I use it on all my bikes. I like being able to see the fuel flowing through it too.

I found that the breather tubing on my Bullet was the same as tubing for fish tank filters, maybe that will fit?
