I bought one of these seats from the Indians. I think that it is the seat that Hitchcock's sell. It looks identical. I can give you any measurements from the seat that I have. On my seat the distance between the 2 spring bolts is 10 and a half inches. It is a very wide seat with 17 and a half inches across the seat at its widest point. From the back of the seat to the front is 16 inches. I am going to fit this big seat when I put on my big 18 litre petrol tank. The spring bolts on the big seat do not line up with the spring holding bolts on the frame. They are 9 and a half inches wide. I know as I have the old Lycett single seat that was on the motorcycle when I bought it. I am going to have to make some brackets for the frame when I fit the bigger seat but I was going to do that anyway, so the seat is a bit further back for me. I have long legs and the old Lycett single seat crowded me up onto the tank too much. I have sat on the big seat by sitting it in position on the frame on top of a folded blanket and then sitting on it and it is very comfortable.

To avoid any confusion may we point out that the Chief style seats Hitchcocks supply are not the same as those supplied direct from India. The Chief seats we supply are exclusive to Hitchcocks Motorcycles and not available from other suppliers. The seat base is stronger with an improved finish. The leather is also better quality. The fitting dimensions are different and the fixing methods are much improved. We supply full fixing kits and instructions – each kit dedicated to the individual Bullet model the seat is intended for. To answer skidmarks question – the seats we supply have three fixing points which range in width from 10 inches to 10 ½ inches, the fixing points also differ in their ‘fore and aft’ location depending on the particular Bullet model the seat is intended for.

I hope that this makes sense so here goes. Go to parts books online at the left of the page. Look up 1999 RE 350. When the drawings come up go to "rear mudguard". Look at part No 13 in the drawing. It is a bolt and its number is 110351. It holds the upper mudguard stay on. I am going to get a longer bolt for here, I may have to make one but that is no problem. I will bolt the mudguard stay up as it is supposed to be but now there will be extra bolt thread enough for another nut to be screwed onto this mudguard stay bolt. I can now put the chief seat springs on this bolt and with the extra nut screw the spring eye into place. This puts the seat back a fair way but it is the most comfortable position for me. I am going to replace the front seat fixing with the Hitchcock's single seat bracket part number 200084 so I will have a semi movable front bracket to go in the right position and bolt down for the front seat mount. This all may sound difficult but with a reasonable workshop it should only take a couple of hours. Making the longer mudguard stay bolt will be the only hard part but with a 22TPI hand cutting die it should be easily done. I can use a spare gearbox mount bolt to make the longer mudguard stay bolt if necessary. I will cut it down to size and run longer threads on it. You can buy a seat spring with a hook as a bottom mounting eye that will go over the mudguard stay bolt from Hitchcock's or Ebay. You could mount the seat solid with brackets instead of springs if you wanted.

I bought this one from Hitchcocks. It came with all the necessary fittings (including longer studs for the mudguard) and bolted straight on. I have since removed the springs as I didn't like the pogo effect. The struts currently fitted are Harley pillion foot rests, drilled at the ends to accept the seat mounting bolts, used for no better reason than I had a pair on the shelf. I've also modified the front mounting to make the whole seat slightly lower, just personal preference. You might think the seat wouldn't be comfortable without the springs as there's very little in the way of padding, but it's very supportive.
