Old plonker mike I use different thickness washers (one on each leg side but each of different thicknesses) between the fork leg inside and the wheel spindle nuts, front wheel, and by doing this I can centre the wheel between the fork legs without squeezing the legs in or splaying them out. Doing it this way means that there is no pressure either way on the fork legs. If the fork leg bottoms are pulled in or splayed out then this may cause wear inside the leg as the damping components go up and down.

Before tightening the cap nuts I put bike on ground and bounce suspension in order to let the legs settle in their natural positions; otherwise I find fork seals tend to weep. Of course always check for good register for backplate in fork.

On the B5 I discovered the cause of my front suspension stiction was the result of the mudguard stays forcing the legs out of parallel so I had to use another method to establish their neutral position.
