I'm not sure if this is quite relevant but I'll try it anyway; when starting from hot, I do HOLD the throttle a BIT more open. It seems to like that a LOT better. Good luck, Chris

For Alan R (and anyone else who was wondering...).

The inner chaincase on the pre-EFI electric start models is mounted at different points where it bolts onto the l/h crankcase, in order to clear the starter motor's gear train.

If you eliminate the E/S mechanism completely and fit the kick-start inner chaincase, the three mounting stud holes no longer line up. Fortunately the E/S models crankcase castings still have the metal in place to allow the stud holes to be drilled and tapped in the original position. Have a look at the gasket section of our hosts' catalogue at part nos. 144621 and 560052.

You will see that the gasket to fit between the inner chaincase and the crankcase will have the three mounting stud holes in different positions for E/S and K/S models. You cannot just rotate them round because of the position of the hole for the 4th stud, upon which the primary chain tensioner pivots.

I did this mod with my Electra's conversion to K/S only and will have to do it again for the current project.br>

UPDATE !!
Tried to kickstart the 500 this morning and my right knee decided to give a little "crack" so might be re-considering that starter motor removal..........Has anyone tried using their left foot for starting ??

I often used my left foot for starting on the centre stand a bit awkward trying it if stalled first in the line at traffic lights with twenty Hell`s Angels behind you. after a while you will never notice any difference.

Hi Bumpkin. Further to Adrian’s comment about fitting an old-style decompressor. I run a 1996 535cc Classic with 8.5:1 compression, high-lift cams , 32mm Mk2 Concentric etc. I have twin-plugged the motor and installed the old-style decompressor between the valves with a 2mm hole leading into the centre of the head (see images in Photobucket under ChrisD200) using a method given by TimNZ). I cannot stop the engine by opening the decompressor, it just runs on. BUT it does make kick-starting so much easier because you can swing the motor with the decompressor open and get more speed to get it over TDC.

Cheers, ChrisD

Leon Novello, you should try being in a small marquee with 20 plus HA presidents.

Chris,

is there room between the valve seats for a slightly bigger hole than 2mm? That might allow enough gas to escape for you to stop as well as start the engine?

As bumpkin has an Electra-X rather than the classic Bullet, it can be kept a lot simpler if you retro-fit the older decompressor valve to the Electra-X head. Also, with the valve not being masked, it stops the AVL engine readily. My apologies for those who have already seen these pictures, possibly more than once!
