That's the 350 AVL Thunderbird, not the classic or C.I. Bullet DannyDan has. Different bike.

Note for Alan R, the bike in question is a 350, so it probably will have the VM24 Mikarb, not the VM28 Mikarb that's on your 500.

The contact breaker drive with the ball bearings can be purchased in individual component form from our hosts, though I wish people would stop calling it a distributor (our hosts included!) because it's not moving a contact arm around around different spark plug leads as on a multi-cylinder engine, it's just a single contact breaker, parts listed here:

Don't just check the accessory catalogue, check the on-line parts books!

I've ridden a 350 iron barrel Bullet in Nepal, bog standard in all respects. We went from sea level to about 3,000m on standard carburation and air filters with no appreciable loss of power higher up (although Blazing Trails, the tour organisers, use 50 Bullets for their high-level Himalaya tours). 10 of us covered about 1,000kms over 8 days and there were a couple of punctures but no mechanical breakdowns at all.

As a guide to altitude settings: if carb jetting at 5000 feet is taken as ‘0’ then at the lower altitude of 3000 feet jet size would be 1 step larger; at sea level 2 steps larger. At the higher altitude of 10,000 feet jet size would be 1 step smaller and at 15,000 two steps smaller.
