Meanwhile, as Mark and WDC have already mentioned, you'll probably need
a new spring cap as inside female edge is inevitably burred, and will slip
off the kick starter shaft when your're winding up the spring. These cups
ain't cheap at approx $42 each, but using the worn cup is a ticket t6 the
Valley of Tears and heavy drinking. Also a another pair of hands helps if
your can actually persuade someone to help without blocking out the ligh
you'll be needing plenty of down there. Good Luck

So I managed to get this sorted over the weekend. It turns out that the spring itself was really weak and looked like it has been bent in and out of shape multiple times. Coupled with this it looks like the previous owner didn't push the lever on to the shaft far enough so that the cup could easily slip off the flat. I had a new spring at the ready and luckily a friend stopped around for a cuppa just as I was starting, I don't know how I would have managed to get the cup and shaft back together whilst tensioning the spring without an extra pair of hands. Thanks again for all the help and advice :-)
