nr 15 is the seal, if oil seeps in it needs to be changed.

if the cb shaft has a groove worn in where it meets the seal it needs to be changed also.

if the cb shaft has to much play in the bushings is needs to be addressed also.

Apologies all round, Mauri is right!
I did not really look at the unit when eventually I slung it in the bin to be replaced with a good one from my parts box to fit Boyer. Never looked at it since.

The CB housing could have been changed in the past of course. There are types with bushes, with bearings, with seals and without. Some have a grease nipple (which often gets overused) and some just rely on oil from the timing chest.
As far as I know they are interchangeable. The only way to know for sure is to dismantle it.

If grease nipple fitted, even a couple of pumps of grease is enough to push the seal out of it's housing; also the bob weights get to run in grease - not giving correct advance. I replaced grease nipple with a blanking screw which I remove and add a couple of drops of oil now and again - worked OK for the last 15K miles and still no apparent wear.
If oil finding it's way up there and blowing out I wonder if there is a breather issue though?

Hi Ronan I had the same problem with my 350 bullet.I found that the rubber breather pipe from the crankcase had collapsed I fitted a new one problem solved.

I decided year`s ago that it was too much work just to fit a seal for the small amount of oil seeping. I used a three-corner file to make a small slot in the bottom of the cover to allow any oil to drip out instead of accumulating inside. I never had a problem with excessive dripping, and the inside was free of oil mist.
