+1 with Pete, also relieves pressure on the valve springs whilst sealing the cylinder with the valves preventing damp ingress....

G willy and peter thanks for those points, am I correct in saying finding tdc on kick start lever is the hardest bit? Sorry for my ignorance!

What I should of said is it the bit where most resistance is felt on kickstart lever?

Yes, just bring it up to compression (resistance). That's near enough TDC for this purpose.

After I fitted an electronic rev-counter to my Electra X (ish) , finding TDC (near enough) means with the valve lifter applied and ignition on, slowly press on the kick start until the rev counter goes from 0000 to 0015. (That is when the igniter box "fires".)
