As the hex bar bolts the footrests tight onto the frame I doubt it would bend much in the event of dropping the bike. The footrests themselves, however, will be malleable. I've straightened quite a few over the years with a big hammer.

Doh in my post I remarked that the only trouble we had in the gearbox swap was getting the hex footrest bar back in always a pig of a job, we found that the crap spacers compressed the were replaced with bits of half inch gal waterpipe thicker wall thickness. Have replaced large bearing in gearbox with box still in frame, got a double dia driftturned up out of hardwood bearing sits on spigot heat up case and drive it in have someone hold a lump of steel against outside of gearbox, piece of cake.
