Im having trouble removing the exhaust can spindle with the extractor tool from Hitchcocks.
After heating the case around the spindle i have tightened the 3 allen bolts onto the cam sleeve nut and turned the big nut that presses onto the part tightened onto the cam sleeve nut, because the big nut requires turning anticlockwise to remove the cam spindle as it presses onto the part of the tool locked onto the cam sleeve nut it starts to undo this due to it undoing anti clockwise also, I'm assuming that the big nut should not grip hold of tool as it is turned allowing it to press off the spindle, any advise would be appreciated , thanks, Jez

Have a look at how it is set up in our hosts' catalogue picture:

The tool seems to work by expanding and exerting pressure on the crankcase, forcing the end of the tool with the three Allen bolts to drag the spindle out of the crankcase, so where is the threaded portion, and is it a left or right-hand thread?

It looks like the inner piece sits over the spindle and the big nut unscrews against the outer part of the tool which is kept steady with the handle.

There was/is another cam spindle extractor, part number 98002, which I have used to remove a pair of adjustable cam spindles, but our hosts are out of stock at the moment.

More heat? I use a clamp-on 'slide' hammer...

Plenty of minor variation on the dia of the cam spindles and the bore in the crank case, and 'oversize' ones are reasonably common. If you 'smear' the bore extracting the old spindle, you my end up needing an oversize one?

Be careful.

Hi Adrian, it is as you describe, the tool clamps onto the cam spindle nut that holds the cam sleeve on the spindle, it undoes the same way as the big nut turns to force the spindle out so the spindle nut is turning off the spindle thread as the big nut is turned, i realise now that maybe it would help to have something to keep the part of the tool that is clamped on still, maybe some mole grips so i can keep a hand on it so it doesn't turn? The outer part of the tool you describe with the handle, are you mistaking the spanner in the picture which is turning the big nut for an handle?

Hi Tim, yes i think it needs heating a lot longer than i had done!

thanks for reply, Jez

Got the spindle out, the extracting tool is a poor design in my opinion, i did away with the part that clamps on with the allen bolts, instead using a washer and ring spanner to exert pressure on the spindle sleeve nut when turning the expanding nut on the tool, the cam sleeve has to be taken off the spindle and the sleeve nut put back on after the washer and spanner, using the tool as is, doesn't matter ho much heat you get in there, the tool will always slip off as you turn the big nut, it needs pressure from behind
the cam nut to pull i out, it would be so easy to make or design a much better tool i can't believe that this is what they use!
