Try moving the bars?

Now I've also had back and shoulder issues on the bike because I have arthritis in every joint and spondylitis which is like arthritis for stuff in the spine that's not a joint. So having put the foot pegs back where they were I then experimented with other bars. I tried lower bars which did not work at all well. I dislike high bars but cannot lean forwards and support weight on my arms for long. So I again reverted to the stock bars. I moved them back as far as they would go and as far forwards as the controls would permit (they're pegged), until I found a comfortable position. Perhaps as little as one inch further forwards than they were originally fitted, with the grips angled just a little downwards from parallel to the ground. I do have to remind myself to sit up straight, slight forwards lean, not slumped like a sack of potatoes. I also tend to ride with the ball of the foot on the peg not the instep, to let me put more weight down there.

2cvandy - I see from your pics that you have the heel & toe gear lever fitted and that you say it's an Electra EFI? - I would like to do the same to my Effie and wondered if you know which lever it is please mate?
I see in our hosts catalog that part #521136 looks like the same part but (it says) is not suitable for an Electra EFI ???

Did you fit this lever or was it already fitted when you bought the bike? I would dearly love to put one on mine! - Gaz

2cvandy - sorry, couldn't see your foot rest attachments for looking. They are quite different to earlier and later models (look in the parts book). The only way to adjust yours would be to bend them, which would need a lot of heat from a big torch or a forge (I'd operate on a spare part). Imo because I have tried it, that the foot peg can come back about an inch to practically touching the kick start but the way the kick start swings out clears the foot peg - but then the foot peg is in an unsuitable position. It is do-able but the LHS foot peg is part of the side stand.

Hi Gaz, yep, it's a 2009 Electra EFI and yes, that looks the same as mine. But I bought mine on ebay from India because I didn't know if it would fit so I didn't mind risking the £8 it cost. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ROYAL-ENFIELD ... 7675.l2557

The spline is exactly the same, it bolted straight on, the only slight issue being that the heel part sticks out a little from the engine casing. It meant that I sometimes caught my heel on the edge of it, but it's made of pretty thin metal, it took literally seconds to pop it in the vice and straighten it out for a better fit.

Well my footrests have now been moved back by 1.25", just in case anybody wants to do the same, here's how.

The RH rest is not as simple as just cutting out 1.25" and re=welding it as it 's angled, so that would also move it inwards. To avoid that happening I cut through the rest 1.25" from the bend. Then I ground a flat on the front of the lower half and the back of the upper half until they fitted together leaving the rest the same distance out from the frame as original. Any more than 1/25" would have interfered with the kickstart. The small bolt is simply there to keep everything in line until I can get it welded at the weekend.

The LH rest is simple, just a case of re-drilling the mounting holes 1.25" further forward and then trimming off the excess metal.

As you can see, I had to shave a little metal from the heel side of the gear lever to restore clearance, though if that ever proves to be a problem I can always re-fit the original lever.

Hopefully this should alleviate the backache, I'll report back once I've had a chance to give it a test run.

Well the job's finished, both footrests have been moved rearwards by an 1 1/4" -

I think that's about as far as is sensible on the Electra EFI, any more and the RH will interfere with the kick start, and as the side stand mount moves back with the LH footrest, any more and the end of the side stand would be in the way when lowering the centre stand.

I did have to revert to the original gear lever as the heel end of the heel / toe was too close to the footrest, but both gear lever and rear brake are within easy reach of my size 8 boots so unless you have small feet I don't think anyone would have a problem.

Just been out for a test ride and it's much better, not perfect maybe, I would ideally have liked to move them back 2", but a good compromise given the limitations mentioned above, and best of all, it cost nothingpence,,,,,,,,,,

here's a pic of the finished LH rest ready to fit ;

and a pic of the bike, just because I think she's pretty,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
