I tuned the advance of the ignition on my 99 Bullet with an el cheapo dial gauge. It had 0,4mm advance where it should have 0,8mm advance. I followed the procedure described by Pete Snidal. The Bullet now has a noticeably improved performance. This was my first time to tune an ignition, and I can tell you it was lots of fun :)

Glad you got it running better but really, the chances of measuring accurately through the plug hole are fairly low. The piston movement at the top of the stroke is very slight compared with the crankshaft rotation.
I just get the advance somewhere in the ball park so the engine will run, then just tweak it (tiny movements of the plate) Always put a scratch mark on the plate to show where you started from.
The best way to do it is dynamically with a timing disc and strobe light of course.
