Thanks Dennis and Pete, I now understand that I had read dynamo conversion and thought mine would be the same (still learning) also over worried about burning out an expensive EI, I have wired the higher voltage coil wire to the light switch so all your advice confirms what I have done, much happier now, thanks again.

Simon, I agree, I know I will not ride at night so stuck with the 6 volt system, my SR2 mag dyno was so shot having not being in use for so long it was far more economical to put in EI than having a refurb also using the thorspark EI which fits inside the mag it will still look original, I now hope the alternator is ok. Thanks again.

To late now as you have ordered the thorspark, but the points in the sr2 can easily be used to fire a double ended coil via the stop button terminal, far easier and cheaper to do as well.

Thanks Dennis, I see what you mean, the points made to be a switch for outside coil and not use the (not working) mag dyno power, just the same as the trigger in my £160 Thorspark, as I said earlier, I am still learning and my school fees this time is £160.

Hang on to your SR2 though as I think they are the acme of magnetos. I have an SR1 on my Bullet and it is a faultless piece of kit. Also the Auto advance unit is a very hard to find item so hang onto that too. With a rotating magnet mag the coil rewind is much easier and cheaper and the condenser is an off the self number as are the points. I'm surprised that it would cost more than £160 to repair and would suggest that you keep your eyes open for spares for it so you can return the bike to original specs at some stage in the future

I'll second that; simple easy peazy to repair, service and adjust. Just having a replaceable condenser makes life so much easier. (which in all likelihood was the only real problem your mag had?)

And IF the coil is ever in need of rewinding, it is a lot simpler to do than on a rotating coil...

I'd sooner have an SR2 over a EI/CDI system any day.

That's a ringing endorsement from the Kiwi contingent then :). You needn't worry about six volt electrics not giving you sufficient light for night riding either. You can get quite high wattage bulbs and even quartz halo ones for six volt systems and with a well regulated alternator you will have nice bright lights all the way. 6V systems got a bad rep from cars with slow starter motors and brown lights due to poor contacts and early generator systems with 30 watt generators that couldn't keep up with demand. You shouldn't have any such issue with the Super Meteor. Of course if you kept the SR2 it wouldn't matter if you had no battery at all....just saying.

Thanks for the advice all,
I had read the SR2 was good and reliable when used reguarly, I did try new points and condenser but the result of hours trying and tweaking was a very weak intermitant spark, I called a couple of mag men and they both advised a refurb with not much idea of cost till examined and I didn't fancy trusting a rare part to the Royal Mail parcel football team, the Thorspark is a good unit and a quick fix as the bike was a display model for years so I need to know the engine is ok and apart from the HT leads coming from the battery box it all looks original, also it will be easy to put back to points if the engine does not cost me my pension fund.
