Steve T thanks a million for the photo, as I've got the 2003 so not sure I need to drill that plug. I got the bike all back together today but before I went for a quick spin I decided I'd make sure the tyres are at right pressure. Put some air in the front and somehow managed to bust the valve in the tube. I'll have to get a very short tool tomorrow to get the valve out and replace it, public holiday here tomorrow.
I was hoping to have a run to warm it up and see if I've gotten rid of the leak. I was able to find a slightly thicker O-Ring for the kickstarter.
The main area of concern is that once I fitted the gear box end I went around to the primary case side and started trying to wiggle the main shaft on that side. There's a very little play there but it is there. I'd checked the bearing when I had all in pieces and the bearing on that side was good. Got my brother for a second opinion on both bearing out and bearing in. He says it'll have to be done. I've a trip over the the west midlands for Wolves V Reading on the 13th so it'll have to do that run and then I'll have to think about it.
It's only a slight play but it means that the actual gear box casing will have to be machined and shimmed or something. Maybe that play is meant to be there as if it was a tight fit getting the main shaft in and out would be hellish difficult.
