One of the reasons I "doubled up" on the cables on my Electra X is that particularly in the case of the clutch cable it is a petrol tank off, and in my case because of the low home made seat a remove the seat job, cover for the electrics off job.(Non standard part.) It would be major operation for the roadside. The really difficult bit and what the cranked long nose pliers are for is to detach the cable end from the arm inside the casing after you have removed the small cover with "5 speed" on it.
You also you need to make sure you have all of the cable removed included the broken bit or it turns in to a fishing expedition or the outer casing of the gearbox off job. (Fortunately I did not have to do that.)

That was a fairly regular event with my Electra (2005 model, before the little swivel thing was used on the inner lever end), I was getting quite used to quick roadside replacements. Usually I only had to undo the plug with the 18mm hex head (⅜" Whit spanner also fits) to get in with the long-nosed pliers to remove the broken cable end and hook the new one into place.

Sadly you're not out of the woods with the revised internal clutch lever from the later 5 speed boxes, as the cable can still snap at the handlebar end.

The british clutch cables, not shown in the Accessory Shop (phone), are considerably more beefy than the indian ones.
