Thanks guys will give the lapping method a go, as after a look this morning they dont look as bad as i first thought last night!

Didn't mean to offend anyone with the 'proper engineer' comment was just referring to my humble skills!

Yes Jefrs, the last thing you want is a polished mirror finish. A finish from 180 grit will be fine and will "grip" the gasket better.
