i think i have sorted the starter issue, i stripped and cleaned the sprag clutchm not alot of dirt and it looked fine, stripped and tested the starter motor again everything looked fine, re-assembled and it is now turning over the engine as it should, not just once and then stopping, so i think that is now fixed. I have not attempted to start it as yet, i am going to strip and clean the carb again but how would i check the ignition timing without the bike running ? How do you do static timing with electronic ignition? I looked at the electronic ignition and it has a mark on it which is still lining up so i dont think anything has moved but as most on here are saying to check it i think it is best i do before attempting to start it.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Michael, if the bike runs fine when warm, leave the ignition alone, as it must be ok, also the carb settings must be somewhere near. You either have too weak a mixture for cold starting, or, possibly your pushrods may be over adjusted and holding the valves open slightly when cold. If you have no play in the pushrods with the piston at TDC compression, I suggest setting them with a small amount of play and try again, also check your 'choke' [enrichener] jet in the carb is not blocked. Regards, Paul.

That you have sorted the starter motor is good :) now it just a matter of getting the engine to perform
While you have the carb apart it might be an idea to check the float height, see Tech Notes

I would not normally make this suggestion except that it seems the engine has not run properly since acquisition and that the previous owner having buggered about with other things may well have changed the float height.

If you can now get the engine running then settings can't be far out. As far as the timing goes, you can just advance and retard a tiny bit and see if it's better or worse.
people use degree disks and timing lights but really, with a pretty unsophisticated engine like this, suck it and see is as good a way of doing it as any other. Just make sure you mark the timing so you know where you are. If you want to go the timing light route, there's a tech note here to help.
