I need a little advice about the consequences of fitting a freer flowing air filter to my '05 iron barrel 500. The PO had fitted a shorter sporty exhaust, presumably from our hosts, along with a 115 main jet in the carb. She runs and starts fine, and returns 60/70 mpg. I'm considering fitting an S&B pancake filter, more to free up the RH toolbox than anything else, though a bit more poke would be handy, or I might just go for the more expensive option of going "period"with a tea caddy. I've ruled out a bell mouth as I live half a mile down a dusty farm track which I reckon won't do the carb much good. The thing is, if I go with the pancake option and jet up the carb as per Hitchcocks recomendations will I even notice any difference in performance and if so, will it be necessary to fit an 18 tooth gearbox sprocket to make the most of it? Also, what effect would any of this have on mpg?
