If the sprag clutch does fail it will most likely jam the primary side up until the offending fragments are removed - mine did, I was unable to kickstart it and had a nice little 15 minute stroll pushing the bike home! Fortunately there was only one short uphill slope, and not very steep. Your condition doesn't sound like it would allow you to do a lot of pushing. I ended up ditching the E/S altogether.
To make starting easier, since the valve lifter mechanism on the AVL engines is pretty useless, you can modify the head to take an old-style Bullet decompressor valve.
