Here's another way of ensuring you don't lose you drain plugs or strip the threads.
Sump Plugs

I've fitted Fumoto drain valves on a couple of my bikes. After I've measured the thread size/pitch I'll fit one on the B5. Yes it'll protrude beyond the protective bolt in front of the OEM plug, but I've no intention going off road where loosing 1/2 to 3/4" of ground clearance is an issue. If I do end up off roading then worrying about the drain plug catching will not be uppermost in my thoughts!

It all depends on whether you are using full race sump plugs or touring versions I'd say.
