Thack, thankyou for that long discourse on battery capacity. I know, but you explained beautifully. I used to fit landrovers and APC's out with radio sets when I was serving my queen and country. They were 12v/100ah. Four of them in series/parallel configuration. Which is why I used a 25 kva genny to static charge them.

Scaly. Yes, it's mounted on the handlebars with the mounting kit supplied in the box. It does, inevitably, get shaken about. I presume the manufacturers know about this and built the thing to withstand that, but who knows?

Jaffa. Yes. Staionary and switched on, the bike will charge the battery in the GPS. And that simple fact has me wondering now, if Scaly hasn't really hit the nail on the head.

I spoke with Hitchcocks today about a different matter entirely, but Dave#2 at H's told me to wait until next week and speak with Dave#1. He is the electrical guru.

Thanks for all the input lads, it's all under consideration. I'll get back to you all on this at a later date.

Scaly's point about having the headlamp on is only relevant if you have a pre-1999 alternator.

Anything later on a classic Bullet has the 4 wire stator, and the stator coils for the feed to the regulator/rectifier and on to the battery are totally isolated from the stator coils that power the direct AC lighting feed to the headlamp.

What year is your Bullet?

I suppose the obvious question is does it work ok in your car? Has it got a fuse in the power line?

Has the GPS got a setting to turn automatic shut down off or set the shut down voltage so if your bikes voltage dropped a bit while at low revs it would remain on

OK, the internal battery in the GPS is fully charged, so I'm leaning toward Scaly's vibration theory.. The internal battery should keep it running for an hour or so at least. When I switch the power supply off, the GPS automatically closes down, so Les might be on to something with the auto shutdown setting.

I'm going to try a run with the GPS running on its own battery, i.e. mounted and switched on but not connected to the bike's electrical supply. If it runs OK, then I reckon Scaly has it, somehow.

I'll get back to you...
