Hi all, latest instalment of my sprag replacement.




Bike and bits all cleaned up ready for assembly. A few things I noticed/found as I went along. First, the clutch retaining nut, (Nylock), was only finget tight!, second, the large bolt head on the bottom frame/sidestand plate was not tight, and thirdly, the wheel mount plate that the brake and axle bolt to on left side of swing fork is slightly bent, which is pulling the wheel over to the right when the brake/sprocket nut is tightened. I am going to remove the swing arm and attempt to pull it true in my big vice!
Otherwise all is good to go for re-assembly with the new German sprag assembly.

One other thing that surfaced is that the three holes for the countersunk screws that bolt the inner case to the crankcase are not in the same place as the earlier non electric start bikes, as can be seen by my modified gasket, and the three other bosses on the crankcase. I have also bought all the seals for the inner and outer cases, plus an 18 tooth sprocket and tab washer to replace whilst it is stripped, from our hosts.

By the way, I didn`t order the wrong gasket, nor did they send the wrong one, I had bought a gasket set for the earlier bikes, plus other bits from a friend, so just punched three more holes in the gasket.

I would like to restore my 2008 Electra X. The sprag clutch failed dramatically at 4000 miles so much so that the inner casing would need replacing as it has been chewed up. having seen a pair of used cases on Mr `H`s website. I wonder if this exercise is feasible and wonder what other pitfalls I am likely to encounter. I would add that certain arthritic problems mean I would prefer to use my local dealer to fix this,so hopefully it would be financially viable. I would appreciate any opinions.

Thanks Norm, I appreciate your comments, I have managed during the last 9-10 months with the kick start (sometimes being troublesome)
It has gone through stage one performance tweak,prior to sprag exploding which, I wonder may have contributed to its troublesome nature.
So,finally I think I will decide to enjoy my machine as it is.
