I am planning some work on my gearbox ('89 350) as I believe the bronze bush between the layshaft and Kickstart shaft has failed. It may turn out that the other bush has failed too; if this is the case, will I have to remove and strip the entire box? How do I remove and replace it? I'm hoping to get away without removing the 'box from the frame.

I'm fairly certain that all jobs can be carried out with the box in place, except one which is the removal of the bell crank. (can't remove the pin)

This won't be a problem unless this part is worn or damaged.. All bearings and bushings accessible no problem..

For starters they don't have bronze bushes in Indian boxes, box will be filled with that obnoxious grease they put in them and replacing the bushes is a bit of a bitch of a job if you don't have the tools, in particular replacing the kickstart bush. What makes you think the bushes might have failed?

First sign was the kickstart lever moving back and forth under acceleration and deceleration, which it hadn't done previously, accompanied by grinding noise from the gearbox.
Now, the bike stalls when I try to move off, with accompanying noises. Obviously a major failure; all seems well when the bike is running in neutral, so I am inclined to think the mainshaft bearings are OK. I will have to open the box to find out; I have no garage and live in NW Europe so it will have to wait a while for better weather, but i want to have some idea what to expect and to have parts at the ready.

if it is the bushings that are the cause, there is an alignment problem.

this could be from casing to casing.

or simply the bushings that are not straight.



quality control at the time of the iron bullet was almost no existing.



in both case that i have encountered, the problem was with the bushings.


in you replace the bushings don’t forget to order part nr 5 also.
