We love Norm, It's just that he was bitten by an angry Electra X some time back, and that didn't help things!

I have never had a problem on my EFI. I love it's eccentricities and noises, and the fact that it has a deep voice, not a whining sound!

Check the engine and frame nuts, they can work loose. If you find any, then use a little locktite!

With reference to Electra X engine problems just out of guarantee. Can anyone inform me what mileage such failures happen at. My 2006 Electra X purchased last year only has just over 3000 miles on the clock.
(I have heard a lot of comment about the problem but I am having trouble pinning down specifics.)

Jim...

It's also the type of bike you bought...

For instance, most modern bike manufacturers try to make it impossible for owners to maintain almost anything on their bike, i.e.

Hands

On

Never

Deemed

Aceptable

or...

Whereas our bullets, especially the iron ones, would die quickley from lack of love and adjustment, i.e.

Every

Nut

Falls

In

Every

Long

Distance

Or something similar to that.

Quite, it appears thus far in just over a year of ownership of a Royal "Oilfield" Electra X.
They have similar problems to Hardly Dangerous's but are cheaper to fix.
(Locktight, Nyloc, R clips, and gasket sealant are your friends.)

It does not state in the workshop manual you need an industrial strength magnet to remove the oil filter.
(Fortunately I have some of those.)

Regarding the noise, it probably is a small air leak at the exhaust head joint. I don't know if the pipe is a push fit in the head on yours, but on bikes so fitted, sometimes the exhaust pulses make the pipe move in and out of the head a fraction, causing the metalic tapping noise.

....Several Enfields over nearly 40 years and all supremely reliable - I've never ever busted one. Sprags all fine, electics all good, no headless pistons not even a broken cable or a puncture. You guys really make me feel inadequate!

I've found the cure for my problem. It's a substance called alcohol ;-)

Problem solved. I spotted a bit of soot around the exhaust down pipe where it enters the head so it's blowing from there. The odd thing is that I had my hand round it the other day (before the bike warmed up) and couldn't feel a thing. Oh well, looks like it's a new gasket.
