I put a regulator/rectifier on my 6V alternator bullet. I know it isn't the original setup but it is easily reversible and it works soooo much better. The switched charge rate system is extremely crude and even working perfectly shortens battery life as it charges at a fixed trickle rate whether or not the battery is charged. I got so tired of replacing blown bulbs and topping up the battery that I installed a solid state device in the same place as the rectifier used to be and haven't looked back since.
