Am I right in thinking that the idling circuit takes air through the small hole at the intake side of the carb? Blowing through this might improve matters.

Just to follow up after you good people gave so much advice - although you will laugh at me!
Having done just about everything that I know to get a bike working, including fitting a re-jetted Mikcarb in place of the Amal, in desperation I re-timed the Boyer by turning the stator in the opposite direction to where it had been before. The bike no starts with a tap on the kick start and goes like a rocket!
(Those of you who know Boyers will know that you start by setting it to TDC and then turn it clockwise to the correct advance. Well I'd turned it anti-clockwise at some point, i.e. after TDC!)

What was originally wrong, I don't know.
