My Electra X has started with what seems like a reg/rec problem. It has been coping with lights on and heated grips and lights on together until the other day. On checking the charge rate it shows 13'5 volts with grips and lights and with either on there own anything from 13'5 up to 16 volts but most of the time 14'5 but the starter doesn't work unless the bike has had a good run. The battery is only a few months old so shouldn't be that so is it the reg/rec, what do yhe collective think

Dave,
I'm no expert but "anything from 13'5 up to 16 volts" could be over charging and that has damaged the new battery so it's not holding a charge. So from the info you've given it could, repeat could be faulty reg/rec and battery.

It could also be a whole bunch of bad connections but for some reason either the charged is not getting to the battery, the battery is not holding the charge or it's not getting the the starter motor.

Sorry about this, stuff keeps popping into my head. What about the starter solonoid. Had you tried shorting the big terminals together?

Just to back up something that Paul said: 16V is too high and will cook the battery. Normal charging voltages for float systems like in cars and bikes is anywhere between 13.8V and 14.4V. You might see up to 14.5V on some cars, but above that and you are at risk of overcharging.

16v is to high and the battery may have been damaged but there could also be a problem with a fault of some sort slowly draining the battery when the bike is switched off, you could check the voltage after a run and say a day later without running or switching anything on

The solonoid won't operate unless it has a near perfect voltage. I would check the battery voltage after it has rested overnight. My reg/rect gave out an intermittent burst of 16v without causing any trouble. That said it did fail completley a few months later by not giving out any charge at all and I replaced it with a 3phase Boyer power box. No problems since.
