So today, strip clutch assembly, inspect, nothing untoward to report.Re-assemble, but this time using nine springs, six on the outer PCD of Hitchcocks "Clutch Improvement Kit", and three strong over the clutch centre posts. Clutch too heavy to operate, and dragging with the three stronger centre springs. Removed and fitted three standard springs. No clutch drag now, and not too heavy to operate. Will road test tomorrow.

Tested today and I am able to say there is no slip at all! :) However, too heavy to operate, and with slight drag. By the look of it,I will have to be replacing this after all with a proper Newby clutch.

I realise this is probably a silly comment, but have you tested all the plates on a piece of glass to make sure they are absolutely and utterly flat?

I've had a few British bikes in my time, and "wavy" plates seem to happen quite often. They cause the clutch to both slip and drag, but the slipping is the most noticeable. I just thought I'd mention it because I doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet in this thread.

Good Point. I got a marked improvement in mine once I'd trued up the plates. They had cupped and as a consequence never cleared. This I am happy to say is all a horrid memory of the past as I'm now happily fitted with cork friction plates. Fie to the unbelievers!
