Michael, what about a strip of thin stainless or sheetmetal wrapped around it with a bolt to pull it together similar to a muffler clamp

This really shouldn't work, and I'm a little ashamed of it: but some years ago I had a hole in my car silencer just before MOT, so I stuck a square cut from 'ally' beer can on with bathroom silicon. I said some years ago, in fact it was probably 5 years - and it's still holding on!!
