One last query .. I'm intrigued why you take the meat off of the barrell instead of the head?

That's an easy one, Tom - a barrel [iron or alloy] is cheaper than a head, easier to set up in the lathe and therefore easier to machine. I have put heads in the lathe to machine the squish bands I put in them and they take much longer to set up. regards, Paul.
