Or in other words does it need air flowing over it to keep it cool? I've just finished my custom narrow tool boxes and have fitted the coil in the right hand one, but I'm wondering if this will be too hot for it?

It should be alright in there; they do get hot in operation, especially underneath the bonnet of a car. If you park and leave the ignition on and the points are closed, then it will get really hot.

Hi guys---------- I have my HT coil in the L/H toolbox and there is a natural draught of air coming in from the rear brake switch opening.......no problems..

Mines in the rh tool box with no holes for air, so i think i might stick a few holes in the side just incase!

Mine is between the battery box thing and the square air box sort of stuck to frame at an angle,

hi scalyback that is the natural indian bullet coil position the standard coil has liquid in it maybe oil i cant remember and yes they get hot but not a problem atb paul

Mines attached the top tube, under the tank above the engine, no problems (and a nice short HT lead as a bonus).

I have just relocated my uprated HT coil from the left toolbox to a point on the frame under the tank, and just above the engine. The HT lead is now 150 mm long, compared to 500 mm long. I have also taken out all wiring connectors on the ignition circuit. I am sure that the bike is going better now,spark at the plug is much stronger. I run without a battery, just alternator and Powerbox.

No heating problems on the coil either.

Hi guys-----------GRUNDA !!! How's it hanging, me old mucker ???.......Generally HT coils consist of a LAMINATED IRON CORE ( this helps to minimise "Eddy Currents" or Back EMF )surrounded by the PRIMARY and SECONDARY windings and filled with a light oil....If you are "Scrapping" one then the oil is useful in the general oil can on your bench----the Aluminium body makes a great mold for casting a tool handle out of resin---- the strips of laminated iron work very well as shim for the tool holder on a small lathe..............
