Why would my ammeter read positive charging when lights are switched off but when lights are on a negative charge is reading.

Charging output is low, I am assuming that you mean when the bike is running. See Hitchcocks tech page on charging tests.

when the lights are on , the battery is discharging , when no lights the battery is charging back up. ideally there should not be a discharge (lights on) with the engine revving , battery charge should go down to minimum within a few minutes , if it is charging permanently , suspect faulty battery
