Phil,
not much point in putting grease on them because the bushes are bonded rubber. Once you can get the swing arm int the press they come out fairly easily once you break the initial bond/rust

When doing this sort of thing you need a big hammer. I small one, even used vigorously, just isn't the same. You also need to brace whatever the problem is against a wall or something to stop it moving. If possible, pretension the joint or whatever it is with a puller of some sort. Your hammer blows then add to the pretension and produce more force. It often takes quite a long time to set a job like this up but then one blow and you're done. Properly braced and using lump hammer I've never been defeated.
