Alan R, if you connect the input on a power box to a battery, then reconnect in the opposite polarity, you have applied an a/c current... just with a very small number of Herz! The point is that it rectifies the current to the same polarity.
That does not, of course test the regulator function .

I blew my diodes in the powerbox , they are resin sealed so cant be fixed as far as I know , reverse polarity of current can damage them so you might need to test it .
