My bush tends to work a bit loose and weeps gear oil and grease when the box gets fully warm , on the last rebuild I coated it's thread with blue hylomar and a center punch ding so as to prevent it from unscrewing ..it can only move 1/6th turn before resistance but it still weeps .
An O ring might help on the next rebuild .

Hi Toddy, I thought it may not be an easy fix. Sod is the word i used, there are others…

In all honesty it will be enough hassle to work only on the right shift bike. Leave the spare left shifter well alone..

As Norm rightly points out two bikes in bits long term could well defeat you… Keep focused on one only and plan of action..

Decide that the motor and box are coming out and the gearbox split and dismantled.

Order the pin and bush required, but also consider any other job that could be done at this stage..

Maybe upgrade to sealed bearings and replace the kick start pawl, It is 17 years old after all and you won't be in there again soon.

A larger gearbox sprocket, 19 tooth maybe whilst the primary side is off… Don't forget chain case seals and gaskets…

Was also thinking it maybe fairly straight forward to convert left shift back to right side as god intended but right to left presents problems.
As Norm said you would need the left shift box which includes the cast lug or bearing for the shifter shaft..

Further to this and a real pain the 96 right shift frame may not have the welded bearing carriers for the rear brake crossover shaft…

Where are they going to appear from? There is a nice picture by Chris Overton showing the bracketry required on a left shift frame and box.
Orange tape shows the positions of gear box shaft and frame mounted brake shaft bearings…

Besides that left shift box is an absolute dog of a setup, lost count of how many I have converted back to right shift.
