I forgot another potential problem, if the bearing has siexed and it sounds like it has, getting the 2 sprag gears lined up so you can remove the engine sprocket can be very difficult

Norm thanks for tip about the nut, worth remembering. Interestingly the workshop manual doesn't mention the nut but instead refers to a spacer between the rotor and sprocket as if the spocket is held in place by the rotor and the rotor nut. Perhaps this was done on earlier models. Certainly there was no spacer on mine just the nut.

Frank, it is a long time ago that I did some mod to the crossbred, there was no spacer but I think I put the nut on then I made a spacer to go between the nut and the back of the rotor to prevent the nut coming loose, but it is a bit vague as it was several years ago

thanks norm and frank for comments, ill keep them in mind , I took starter motor off as you said and no noise at all, going to take casings off Saturday and then order up bits, many thanks

hi white 1957,i,m white 1967 the best thing to do with the electric start set up on a electra x is junk the lot thats what i did and ive not had a problem since also the sprag on an efi is the same recipe for dissaster they just don,t learn them indians but i heard a rumer last week that they were going to introduce a new starter for 2014 its called a siba dynostarter how very modern and apparently its only six volts so it save half of a 12 volt battery very cunning these indians (sorry)atb paul.
