We are going to start up a Series 2 Inter that has just had a complete engine rebuild and I was mondering if there is anything I should look out for. Is there any way of seeing if oil is being pumped to the big end before starting it up. All the others you can remove the quill bolt and kick it over till oil starts to come out. Any thoughts or advice

Only really big thing (from what I read) is to make sure the crankshaft oil seal has additional security fitted, in the form of lock wiring or lock screws to prevent it blowing out of the housing under pressure. Don't know about checking oil flow, I'm building a Series 2 at the moment and would like to know this too!

Before you start the engine you need to make sure both the oil filter and the oil cooler are full of oil. If you dont do this you can run the engine for some time before oil reaches the big end.

Take of the feed and return pipes to the cooler and use an oil can to fill up, as best you can, the cooler and filter.

Remove the two oil pressure relief valves and turn the engine over on the kickstart until you get good un-interupted flow of oil out of both. Bit messy but...

When you are satisified all the oil ways and cavities between the pump and crank are full start the engine. I would certainly ensure all rockers are well oiled before starting.

Only two mods that are essential on the MK2. As Mark says, mechanically fix the crank oilseal into place, only last week "someone" blew the crank seal because it was not fixed in. Also make sure the oil pressure valve is the later type, small plunger with a hole rather than a ball bearing.

Richard, thanks. Is the later typerelief valve fitted to 1970 engines, ie from number 2001? The relief valves seem very hard to remove, is there a trick to this?

Mark, sorry cant find any reference to the engine serial number for the updated oil pressure relief. However it is a recommended update and the plunger (part number 49995) is a direct replacement for the ball. By "hard to remove" I assume you mean take out the valve from the crankcase. The best thing I have found is a right-angled screw driver. .....Richard

Thanks Richard, yes, I did mean remove from crankcase, mine have been slightly butchered already and the Workshop manual suggests they were Loctited into place originally,they certainly are tight!
