Gents,

Phil - the grey sludge is metallic.

Norm - There was swarfe in the oil slots of the rocker blocks.

Bullet Whisperer - I can't get the front filter plug undone at the moment as it's stuck solid. There was a little magnetic sludge in the oil filter (I have a magnet in the filter).

I've replaced the worm nut and spindle and reassembled everything. I've verified oil flow. I ran the engine briefly this evening but have noticed that there is a low rhythmic 'growl' coming from somewhere in the engine that wasn't evident prior to the oil starvation. I haven't had an opportunity to rev the engine or put it under any load.

Gents, I managed to remove the front drain plug this morning and found nothing more than oil! I ran the engine for a bit and it appears that I've been very fortunate as now the engine sounds as it should. I'll run the bike for a day or so and drop the oil again to see if there is any swarf. Lesson learned - if the engine exhibits any odd noises, check the oil flow. I think I'll start putting some pennies away towards a bottom end rebuild perhaps even upgrading to 535cc. Thanks for all your assistance. Andy
