sorry dennis I disagree! in the case of the old zenner diode then what you say might happen , but with a modern designed electronic reg this will not be the case WITH A GOOD BATTERY.
note how modern cars often have the same altenator on both the base model and the top of the range model , the base model has a small petrol engine , other models have a diesel engine with heater plugs heated windows etc with a much larger battery , but often the same altenator
IF your bike battery boils when connected to a modern reg /rect (note the boyer black box powers lights without blowing them) then it is knackered,
