I have recently purchased a Flying Flea.I have come to the conclusion the Flywheel Magneto is no longer up to the Job.So I have decided to convert it to Coil Ignition with a Battery ( I know I cant charge it on the bike ,not worried about that )I have purchased a 6 volt battery ,in line kill switch and a 6 volt coil.Wired it up as battery to coil,then coil to Points with a battery earth return.I got a spark at the plug,but the coil got very hot so had to switch off.The coil I was sold was only a small one for a 6 volt scooter.Should I get the large cylinder type coil,or am I wiring the circuit wrong

I'm of the opinion that you've got the wrong type of coil. Scooters tend to use the 'Energy Transfer' type of coil. In a bizzare twist, it's the same type of coil that the Flying Flea uses, as direct ignition is used. If you're using a battery, you want an 'oil filled' type of coil. One off a Bantam (or bikes of that ilk) will do nicely.

Barry,many thanks,I did wonder,but could not be sure.I will try to get an oil filled one as you suggest.Do you think my basic wiring is correct?

If you've got a spark, your basic wiring is correct. Another thought for you is: Substitute the original coil for the scooter coil you have (Just 'remote' the wires). The theory says it should work. If it does, then the original coil is knackered. If it doesn't, then the magnets in the rotor need re-energising.

Thanks Barry.I will keep you posted after I have purchased a "Proper Coil" and try that in the circuit.I have found a couple of web sites and will send of for one,so will be towards the end of next week.Regards Michael

Barry,just to let you know,I have had success with my Flea.A friend lent me a 6V Coil from a Norton Commando.After wiring it in, it started 2nd kick.Complete success.Thanks

Good to hear you've got the bike running. Now you have the opportunity to test the generator for some sort of output. All you'll need is a bulb (Headlight bulb suggested) and a couple of wires. Just connect the bulb to Earth and the isolated end of a coil and see if the bulb lights up. If you've got any sort of output (even if it's quite low), it's still possible to wire in a rectifier and connect it to your battery (Thus increasing your range).
