Just a quick one here, about to do an oil change, how much to refill with?

Hi John. Its difficult to give an exact ammount as it depends what was drained in the first place.

Example 1 if the engine is being filled after a rebuild then every oilway and chamber will be empty requiring maybe 3 litres..

Example 2 oil tank and crankcase emptied but filter not changed. 1.5 to 2 litres.

There are as many different opinions on this as there are types of oil favoured.

What works for me is this. If the filter has been changed and the timing chest emptied then at first fill with oil through the tappet inspection hatch, which is above the level of the timing chest.

This may seem tedious but it works, keep watch through the oil tank filler with a torch to see the bottom of the tank, when the timing chest is full it will overflow into the oil tank.

When you see this then fill the oil tank in the normal way up to the half way level mark on the dipstick.

Run the engine for at least 10 mins, check for leaks, filter housing and drain plugs and then recheck level on dipstick... top up as required...

1-gallon can will probably be enough for two changes if engine doesnt burn or leak oil out the breather.
cheers gwilly.
