Hi
My 2001 500 bullet is running rich so I need to adjust the air screw but is it clock wise or anti clockwise to weaken the mixture.

Thanks
Dave

Hello there, Djb1972 ------- Dave,It's that old song }--There are more questions than answers, I'm afraid...and as per usual we do one step at a time.. So, what makes you think it's "Running rich" ??----- Do you mean the idling speed is lumpy with a blackish exhaust ?? OR..... the plug is sooty/black after a run ??....in either case, what's the state of the air filter and when was it last serviced/changed?... A straight answer to your question asked is}-- the screw on a VM28 carb is an AIR screw (some carb. types can have a FUEL screw), it is a R/H thread so to WEAKEN the idling mixture you will need to turn it ANTI-clockwise --- ie to admit more air --- and do it in 1/8th turn increments ie 45 degrees at a time....Have a look at our hosts Tech. Notes re}--- carb tuning as well..

Hi

It has a new pancake air filter brought from Mr Hitchcock.
The plug gets black after running it for a while and it's not pulling well,

Will fiddle with it at the weekend as I want to do the Nottingham egg run on the 24th and not have my mates laugh all the way like they did when my zx9r played up last time

Cheers

Hi guys-------- Zx9r ?? = Sharp intake of breath (the Builders favourite)--- "Knowing" nods etc------- OK, joking aside is all else as standard ?? If you've not done anything else at all then it sounds as if having the new air filter is causing problems..Can you describe the COMPLETE set-up }-- ie air filter, carb type, exhaust pipe type, silencer type ?? So far we have------ PANCAKE filter... Cheers matey, let's get this sussed quickly so there's no EGG on your face this time (LoL)

Hello Djb1972,
This might help, had lots of trouble with trying to set the carb up on my machine, so I went & bought a colour tune kit by Gunston, removed spark plug screwed in the colour tune spark plug which has a viewing tube on it fitted the HT lead, then screwed the air mixture fully home ie clockwise then started the bike, letting it warm up first, the colour of the mixture from the carb burned bright yellow (to rich) I then slowly unscrewed the air mixture screw anticlockwise till I had flashs of blue coming into yellow mixture (starting to go weak). I then left it like that & had no more trouble since, My trouble was the carb was worn & had air leaks all over the place & I could not afford a new carb. My book says unscrew the airscrew one & a half turns, after using the colour tune I unscrewed it barely half a turn. Try & get a hold of a colour tune from a mate it's well worth it.
Cheers.

Hi guys---------- a VM28 will only set you back approx £30 on E-Bay, have a look at this }----- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Royal-Enfield ... hash=item4 --------------- but those GUNSONs' are a good bit of kit...... Complete combustion will give a colour similar to that seen in the viewing glass of your central heating boiler ie a pale blue---
