Hi Alan. Glad those settings worked for you. They were achieved after much blood, sweat, and tears (well maybe just a bit of perseverence), and many, many trial runs. They have certainly worked on my 500, which now runs very cleanly from a nice regular tick over to occasional bursts of full throttle. Remember guys, if anyone is having trouble setting up a 500 Classic after changing air filter, silencer, and removing the PAV system I have the detailed carb settings here. Could save you much nashing of teeth! Cheers all. Riggers.

On the matter of carb settings, I've just re-fitted the CV carb on my Electra because, having junked the electric start I was fed up with the erratic idle and random cutting out, which wasn't such a chore with the E/S, but with K/S only it was getting tedious.

I carried out a few tweaks as detailed in the REOC mag, and its great ! not quite got the grunt of the Amal, but far more pleasant starting, idling etc, even started it by hand (probably unwise though !!)

If anyone interested I'll post a few details here ?

Hi,

Would you be kind enough to send me the carb settings that Riggers gave you for the VM28 carb once the PAV was removed and silencer and exhaust replaced.

Best Regards

Hi WINNIE,---------- this is my current, total set-up for a 500cc engine with Alloy Barrel and Standard cyl. head. }----- AIR FILTER = "TEA CADDY" type, CARB. = VM28 (with--- FLOAT HEIGHT = 24MM, MAIN JET =135, NEEDLE JET = P2, PILOT = 30, SLIDE No.= 3, NEEDLE CLIP POSITION = 3/5.), EXHAUST = Std.Long Type chopped down by 30% ie Less restrictive, PLUG = IRRIDIUM, PISTON = 8.5 FORGED, GEARBOX SPROCKET = 19t, FUEL = Best Premium......... With this I still need to increase the main jet a tad more. ( Plug-chop shows a little on the weak side..). RIGGERS main jetting is given as a 1mm drill which my chart shows as slightly rich... but it does look that I'm heading in that direction...In the mean time these overall settings do give a good control in 1st gear whilst 60mph is held comfortably..... An estimated 80mpg seems to be right as well....Please do remember that these are GUIDELINES ONLY... You'll have to do final settings as per whatever your engine tells you it needs...
