Hello everyone.. Problems charging. 1953 350 bullit. Have just invested in a dynamo replacement kit which I have carefully completed and the results are the same as with the old coils etc. I am getting no charge to the battery. As soon as I turn any lights on the amp meter goes to negative discharge. Could someone tell me how to check the output from the dynamo. Could it be the old regulator at fault. ? Not sure how to test this.
Any suggestions would be much appreacheated
Many thanks
Kind regards
Robert

Hi guys--------the link worked for me--but half of it is off the screen so had to minimise it first--------Good stuff on there with our "Nordic" friend ANDERS FR back in 2011 ----------ROBERT, as a starter, put a VOLTMETER across the battery and with an open circuit ie No lights on etc and engine running, you should get approx 6.5 to 7 volts... If you ARE getting that you may well just have a fault on your Ammeter ??...If you get NO voltmeter movement then the regulator is the next item on the list...One thing at a time and done methodically is best IMHO....There are many owners of different makes who have had the innards of their regulators upgraded to modern electronics with great beneficial effects---- as ANDERS did.... It's worth considering ???PS--- Old cars such as the Morris Minor etc had the dynamo / mechanical regulator system as well.... Has the dynamo been "Polarised" ?? since you revamped it ??

Thanks everyone for your help. Not sure what to do about "polarised" could you tell me more please Alan R.
I have, last year, installed an electronic spark as the magneto went ! It has been running and starting perfect for over a year but have now lost the charge. The battery will run down because of the coil fitted to the electronic spark. I therefore get a "count down" on the multimeter from just over 6volts.

Hi ROBERT, Basically POLARISING is giving your Dynamo an electrical "orientation" for the type of EARTH system in use on your vehicle...Have a read of this then give these people a call and explain what probs you're having }----- http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.c ... dynamo.php ---------------- also try this chap }---------------------- https://sites.google.com/site/dynamosdynamos/ --------------- My friend TIM had his dynamo/magneto sorted by him and is v. happy with the results...........Which county are you in ?? I'm in Shropshire..

Many thanks Alan for the info, will try the links you suggest as soon as I can. I work away all week and only have limited time to "play" with the fault. Do you know how to test the dynamo for out-put I need to see if after the rebuild it is actully producing any power . Do you know if any wiring diagrams are available for the bike. I'm in the UK , South Yorkshire.
Kind regards
Robert
