'Evening gents and ladies.

My 2000 Bullet has been laid up for a few months and appears to have developed a short somewhere. To elaborate, when the ignition key is turned the ammeter does not flick down when the engine is turned over by the kickstart. I opened the points cover and discovered that there is a voltage over the points when they are closed and open. Obviously I cannot start the bike as there is no spark. I can't tell the exact voltage as I was using the testing light as my multimeter is kaput. I'm going to have to test the connections on the whole ignition circuit but wondered whether there is somewhere worth checking first?

It may be the condensor shorting to earth.

Remove the nut/screw holding it in contact with the dizzy and let it hang on the wire clear of contact.
Turn over engine see if it sparks now. gwilly

Andy, no need to check the whole ignition circuit, problem is inside the dizzy if you have power on both sides of the points

Thanks gents. I'll investigate the dizzy components first. Odd that everything was working fine when the bike was laid up?!?

Hello there----------- if you have a voltage over the points both closed and open then I think it's your capacitor (condensor)that has gone short circuit... Just replace and try again, they're cheap enough ...(It's the capacitor that gives that brightness to the spark)

And don't throw the old one out till you prove it was faulty
